ALONE AND LONELY
ACT 1
Prologue
Final year in college. It was always about finding a new roommate every year ever since her parents passed away, Rachel is her name and the new roommate this year is Angelina, a country croon singer and a photography student. Tim, Janet and Jason including Rachel are studying architecture. Angelina and Tim have been friends since day go up until now. Only Angelina is not prodigious and owes Tim serious money that was settled by Rachel when they officially agreed to be friends. The only reason Tim befriended her was for her to persuade Rachel into falling in love with her which never happened. The trio, Tim, Jason and Janet treated Angelina very poorly and disband her but music became her panacea. They may have been hard on her but they are pussy cats.

               SCENE 1

                      College. A room in residence.
[Enter Rachel and Angelina, carrying study books]
Angelina:   any plans after the big day?
Rachel:       what big day?
Angelina:   the graduations silly.
Rachel:       we’re not even close with finishing writing the exams.
Angelina:   I know that.
[They sit]
Rachel:       how was your last exam?
Angelina:   I thought we agreed not to talk about our exams.
Rachel:       okay.
Angelina:      have you seen my camera? I didn’t find it in the morning.
Rachel:       no! I haven’t seen it.
Angelina:   I definitely misplaced it. I’m knackered, I really need to take a nap.
Rachel:       you said 30 minutes and we go back.
Angelina:   Rachel, I really appreciate you looking out for me but I’m not studious like you, you need to find yourself a study buddy. Tim for example and he’s the only stud muffin in this college.
Rachel:      I’m not here for a groom…
Angelina:   and a friend either, I’ve heard that before. Each and every year you change your roommate, every coed talk about you.
Rachel:       I don’t care.
Angelina:   suit yourself braggadocio.
Rachel:       with great pleasure. I can go to the library by myself.
Angelica:    I don’t doubt that, not even for a second. I guess maybe it’s not a bad idea to be contemptable.
Rachel:       like I said before, I don’t care about what everyone says behind my back.
Angelina:   okay, can I sleep now?
[Enter Tim]
Tim:            it was open. Hey Angelina, are you sick?
Angelina:   call me a night owl starting from this day.
Tim:      Rachel, can we talk in private please?
Angelina:   I’m sleeping, I can’t hear a thing.
Rachel:       you can talk.
Angelina:   sure, or you can leave if you have other important things to do.
Tim:            I was wondering if maybe you can teach me math, I can pay you if you want.
Rachel:       I’m not a tutor.
Tim:            I know that.
Angelina:   everyone does.
Rachel:       I’m busy with my own preparations now.
Angelina:   sorry buddy, contemporaneous coincidence.
Tim:            then how about I join your study group?
Angelina:   just ask her out already, I can make use of quiescence in this room.
Rachel:         we can study together but I’m not going to be your tutor.
Angelina:   thanks God.
Tim:            when and what time?
Rachel:       tonight, 9pm.
Tim:            yes mam.
Rachel:       excuse me guys.
[Exit Rachel]
Tim:            is she alright?
Angelina:   she just left us here both, why didn’t you ask her when she was still here?
Tim:            really? I thought you were on my side.
Angelina:   seemed like you didn’t need me right then, now you are study buddies, you did it by yourself. Only God knows what you seek from that lady and whatever it is, I hope it doesn’t cripple your emotions permanently.
Tim:  I told you many times that I really like her and I want her to like me back, is that too much to ask?
Angelina:   honestly, you’re asking the wrong person. I don’t care what you two do but be careful Tim. I might have heard something related to ladies like her that they are demented.
Tim:  I will little sis. I’m really glad that I have your support in this, please don’t stop talking about me when you’re with her. Okay?
Angelina:   I’ll try, but can I sleep now?
Tim:           great and please study.
Angelina:   I want to sleep right now because I have been studying the whole night. Good luck with Rachel.
Tim:        okay, don’t forget to put in good words for me.
Angelina:   do you have an interview with her?
Tim:            okay, goodnight.
Angelina:   very funny.
[Exit Tim and Rachel enter, with breakfast]
Angelina:   you just missed your biggest fan.
Rachel:       I have no interest in him.
Angelina:   why am I not surprised?
Rachel:       Angelina, you spent your whole year chunky with my personal life but I still haven’t seen you with a guy.
Angelina: I do have a boyfriend… would you like to meet him right now?
Rachel:       no, what you do with your personal life is none of my business so, I would really appreciate if you can return the favour.
Angelina:   I heard that loud and very clear madam.
Rachel:       thank you. We are not friends, just roommates. Try to remember that when you invite a guy in our room next time.
Angelina:   I will get out of your way from now on, that’s a promise I’m will to keep and lastly, I’m a woman of my words.
Rachel:  thank you again.
Angelina:   so, does that mean we don’t eat breakfast together anymore?
Rachel:     yes, I like to think is a damn pretty idea.
Angelina:   okay.
Rachel:       no hard feelings.
Angelina:   not at all, I think you should get my brother out of his mystery.
Rachel:       I’m not his handmaiden.
Angelina:   you are a cold lady, I don’t know you but with that attitude, you are definitely going to wind up alone in snow or dessert, it’s your decision to make.
Rachel:       ow! I haven’t told you that loneliness is kind of my fate.
Angelina:   mm! I bet it is. Next time when you need someone to escort you somewhere, don’t bother to ask me please.
Rachel:       I never did.
Angelina:   wow! Wow! I am chuffed you finally said it, out loud. Enjoy your breakfast Rachel, I can buy my own you know.
[Exit Angelina and Rachel makes a call]
Rachel:
Bryan?
Bryan:
Rachel! long time.
Rachel:
I didn’t call for pep talk, I think is time.
Bryan:
are you sure?
Rachel:
yes, that’s my legacy and my identity.
Bryan:
I thought you said after graduations.
Rachel:
I remember my words very well.
Bryan:
okay, do you want me to bring the lawyers by your school
or you want to meet them here?
Rachel:        I prefer to come over there.
Bryan:        okay Rachel, when?
Rachel:                tomorrow morning.
Bryan:        don’t ever forget that we are all here for you if you need anything. Joyce misses you and so do I.
Rachel:
not in my parent graves.
Bryan:
I’m very proud of your great accomplishment.
Rachel:
so am I, see you tomorrow.
Bryan:
take care.
Rachel:
always.
[Rachel hung off and enter Angelina]
Rachel:       Angelina, I’m very sorry about earlier. I had no right to talk with you in that manner and I would really appreciate if things go back to the way it used to.
Angelina:   in what way exactly? Just me and you but not friends, yeah, it’s not happening. You are delusional and you need serious prayer.
Rachel:        I will continue being your guardian until after graduations.
Angelina:   are you trying to avoid my brother or what? Ow! I see now, you just realised that it’s going to be you and him the whole night and you can’t deal with him alone so you want me to do what exactly?
Rachel:      you asked me to be your anchor and that’s what I’m doing.
Angelina:   thanks for reminding me about how important my studies are to you and reminding me of my career everyday but from now on I would appreciate to that on my own. Fail if I fail. It’s my life, not yours comprehend?
Rachel:       I don’t want you to fail.
Angelina:   me neither but I must admit, fail is my fate isn’t loneliness yours?
Rachel:          I was just trying to help you graduate this year.
Angelina:   are you sure about that? I’m sorry Rachel, you made it clear the first day I walked into this room that you have no interest in my life choices.
Rachel:   I said that because I was pissed off my subsequent roommates. I have always been the one with good grades or passed the exams. All I ever wanted was to remind them why they’re here and I lashed out on you. I was wrong and I’m sorry. I’m not giving up on you Angelina because you have a great talent and career.
[A knock on the door]
Angelina:   are you expecting someone?
Rachel:       no.
[Enter Bryan]
Bryan:        morning ladies, I’m really sorry to crush the party.
Rachel:       what are you doing here?
Angelina:   come in Mr handsome, are you her boyfriend?
Bryan:        I wish. Rachel, we need to talk.
Rachel:       I’m sure it can wait until tomorrow because right now I’m off to study.
Angelina:   you said 9pm, what changed?
Bryan:        something happened and I thought I should come and tell you in person.
Rachel: we agreed that no business talk until after my graduations, didn’t we?
Bryan:        I lied before, when I said that the business was running smooth, actually ever since your parents past away, the investors have been pulling away and the company representatives moved along also. We’re skint, the gallery is falling apart and the artists are looking for other companies to share their work with. I’m really sorry that I lied.
Rachel:       it’s not your fault. Please leave now and shut down the gallery. Pay all the employees and let them know what really went down.
Bryan:        are you sure?
Rachel:      always. Don’t ever come to my school, ever again.
Bryan:        I’m really sorry Rachel.
Rachel:       I don’t know what you’re sorry about but thanks for trying.
[Angelina continues writing while singing and playing guitar like she’s not hearing a thing and the name of the song is Alone]
Bryan:        is your roommate a musician?
Rachel:       she’s everything.
Bryan:        talk soon.
[Exit Bryan]
Rachel:       what exactly do you want to be?
Angelina:   we are not friends remember? Can you stop acting like you care about my future and we just be roommates.
Rachel:       fine by me.
Angelina:
thank you.
Rachel:
are you coming to study with us tonight?
Angelina:
no.
Rachel
okay, continue writing your meaningless songs.
Angelina
with great pleasure.
[Rachel Exit and Angelina continue with her hobby and tale]
[Exeunt]
